Why support us?
Queer Yoga welcomes LGBTQ+ folks to be a part of a community whilst engaging in an embodiment practice that has the potential to positively impact mental and physical wellbeing, in a trauma-informed setting. We offer heavily reduced pricing options compared to the industry standard. This is because we aim to reduce barriers to accessing yoga, and finances is often one of them. We offer tiered pricing options and have free spaces available. This is an important part of our ethos.
Feedback from our community describes how Queer Yoga has helped those with mobility issues and with social anxiety, supporting those who are neurodivergent and those exploring their sexuality and/or gender identity.
All donations go directly back into the community and help us to continue delivering yoga to those who may not usually have access.
When we receive external funding this helps us pay for the studio spaces we rent and supports us in paying our amazing team of community yoga teachers a steady rate for the work we do. Funding can also support us to set up new classes, purchase equipment so that attendees do not need to bring anything themselves, or support our teachers to go through training courses, such as the Trauma Informed Teacher Training led by Edinburgh Community Yoga.
Why yoga?
Yoga can encourage bodies to shift from the sympathetic (fight or flight response) to the parasympathetic (rest, digest) nervous system and help widen our windows of tolerance. Research into yoga suggests it has the potential to:
Support trauma recovery
Decrease anxiety and stress
Alleviate depressive symptoms
Benefit sleep
The International Journal of Yoga Therapy is a great starting point for more reading.
In a society where queer inclusion cannot always be taken for granted, participating in a regular community group can also have positive impact on mental wellbeing, fighting loneliness and feelings of exclusion and discrimination.
Your donation supports LGBTQ+ people’s physical and mental wellbeing in a society that is increasingly hostile to anyone living their life outside of of heteronormative and cisgender identities.
